Human Achievement Hour 2012

From the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI)-- "On March 31, some people will be sitting in the dark to express their "vote" for action on global climate change (see CD post on Earth Hour). Instead, you can join CEI and the thousands of people around the world who will be celebrating Human Achievement Hour (HAH). Leave your lights on to express your appreciation for the inventions and innovations that make today the best time to be alive and the recognition that future solutions require individual freedom not government coercion."

I'm on board, and summed up my attitude this way: “My ancestors didn’t survive the Black Plague and Dark Ages, create the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution, and bring about the past two hundred years of astonishing scientific and technological progress so that we could huddle in the dark.”

I worship free enterprise and the price signal---but there is a fly in the real-world ointment.

That price signal does not capture the cost of pollution.

Ergo, Milton Friedman advocated taxing pollution.

Polluters are crony communists; they pass on the cost of pollution to the larger society, but reap the gains for themselves. Socialize the costs; privatize the gains.

Also, what of the property rights of property owners whose land, water and air is polluted without permission or compensation? Who has the right to pollute another owner's property?

As to global warming, let me guess:

You are GOP, you think it is all hooey.

You are Dems, you believe disaster is imminent.

And that's the way we do policy in the USA, military, social or environmental.

There is no global warning or pollution !!! What is wrong with you Benjamin !!

As long as corporations are making money and I have the conveniences of plastic water bottles, styro-foam paper plates and gas buring vehicles what is wrong with that.

The smog produced by gas buring cars was proven to be B.S. as is global warming. The hydrocarbons just disappear int the air.

Benji you are a communist, socialist just like Obama who wants to produce "clean" energy.

Crude Oil is a natural prodcut of the earth and can't pollute the earth from where it came.

Don Culo-

For sure, there is pollution, and there is no free enterprise solution to it.

On global warming, I am a fence-sitter. But I certainly don't pretend to know more than very smart people who make earnest inquiries into the truth.

BTW, I understand after last summer, the GOIP blowhards in Wichita Falls are mute about global warming. 100 straight days over 100 degrees.

Dallas had more than 70.

Ha! Except technological improvements, which are driven entirely by the free enterprise. Pollution has been dropping steadily since the late 1800's. Legislation has had little if any effect on the downward slope of the levels of pollution.
